The Chambers of Crete, with the scientific support of a group of experts from the University of Piraeus and the assistance of the Region of Crete, achieved the definitive inclusion of Crete in the favourable provisions of the Transport Equivalent.

The findings of the special report of the University of Piraeus regarding the necessity and expediency of Crete's inclusion in the Transport Equivalent, were accepted by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, and the relevant amendment was passed where this exceptional arrangement was accepted, in order to grant Island Cost Compensation to beneficiary companies based in Crete for specific professional activities with increased transport costs.
Based on the findings of the study by the University of Piraeus, during the pilot phase of the expanded application of the Transport Equivalent, it is estimated that more than 32,000 businesses from the 20 most important economic branches of the regional economy may benefit.
The above positive development was also sealed through a special meeting convened by the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Nektarios Santorinios, in which G.S. of the Aegean and Islands Policy, Giorgos Kassaras, the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Angelos Kotios, Manolis Alifierakis, President of the Chamber of Heraklion, Giorgos Giakoumakis, President of the Chamber of Rethymnon, Antonis Rokakis, President of the Chamber of Chania, and Nikolaos Reizakis from the Chamber of Rethymnon and vice-president of E.O.A.E.N.
