Department of Statistics & Insurance Science
The Department was created and operated for the first time under the name "Department of Statistics" in the Academic year 1977-78 within the framework of the Higher Industrial School of Piraeus (Ministerial Decision 96792/21-9-77, G.G.I. 984Β/8-10- 77). With the Framework Law for H.E.I. and from the Academic year 1984-85 (N.D. 1268/82 and P.D. 43/1984) it functioned as an independent Department of Statistics and Insurance Science.
The Department of Statistics and Insurance Science is the only one with two directions, Statistics and Insurance, which prove to be particularly useful in today's era, insofar as they follow the demands of the labor market, as they provide more possibilities for professional absorption, a key priority in times of economic crisis and prolonged youth unemployment.
In this direction, the postgraduate programs of the Department also help, which correspond to the two directions of study and constitute an additional resource for professional rehabilitation and a successful career, both in Greece and internationally, providing high-level scientific specialization .
The purpose of the Department is to create a high-level scientific potential, well-qualified both academically and in practical skills, in order to cultivate individual inclinations and interests but also through the academic and professional development of its graduates to contribute to the improvement of difficult finances conditions facing our country in recent years.
To achieve this goal, among others, we proceeded to reform the existing curriculum, which is gradually being put into operation from the academic year 2017-18, in such a way that it responds to modern scientific developments and covers the whole range of modern scientific requirements related to the ever-growing and professionally attractive branches of Statistics and Actuarial Science.
With the cooperation and help of everyone, academic, administrative staff and students, and by intensifying our efforts together, we can achieve the further proper functioning, the upgrading of studies and the extroversion of our Department, so that it continues its brilliant course and the his valuable contribution to the University of Piraeus and in general to the Higher Education of our country.
