Piraeus, the country's largest port, a city with a huge coastal front and a range of economic activities related to the sea, is at the center of a debate promoting a different model of sustainable development. A strategic planning whether it concerns the island or the coastal area must be based on the adoption of environmentally friendly development directions of the local economy, through the promotion of Renewable Energy Sources, alternative forms of tourism, organic agriculture and animal husbandry, fishing.
Such action plans also require close cooperation with Member States, regions and municipalities, businesses, research bodies, citizens and other stakeholders involved in the circular economy to make the transition from the current economy models, which are now outdated and do not provide solutions to critical issues that require responses such as climate change, environmental pollution and dwindling water and energy supplies.
