For the World Stray Animals Day and the Panhellenic School Animal Welfare Day (April 4th), the University of Piraeus organized the Workshop, "Information and awareness about animals", welcoming for the first time in its Conference Amphitheatre academics, administrators and students with their four-legged companions.
The Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor Michael Sfakianakis welcomed the participants by dedicating stating the day to the pillar of moral values engaging empathy and generosity. The University of Piraeus does not stop in the pillar of education, where we are strong as in the recent evaluation of seven actions we were awarded Full Compliance, but it also aims at the comprehensive formation of personalities. Zoophilia or the love for animals is a very important feeling as it cultivates in man love and empathy for all living beings.
The Workshop addressed the issues of, Medical Care - Hygiene - Education - Coexistence - Animal Abuse, the Therapeutic Properties of Animals and Legislation and State Actions through presentations and interaction with experts on their respective fields.
The Workshop highlighted the many different facets of Zoophilia, the development at all levels that has occurred in recent years, the actions of associations, the state and decentralized administration.
Presentations were by veterinarian Konstantinos Chandras, Maria Vlachou and Marilia Tsopela from Dogs Voice, Angeliki Kakitsi and Katerina Bari from Help Horses Ymittos, Alexandros Vardaxoglou DVM Veterinarian, Stratos Vouvoutas and Petros Lionakis, trainers, Manos Spatharos, Mary Spatharou,
Theodoros Kampouris of the Animal Protection Department of the Hellenic Police Headquarters and the Municipal Advisor for the Welfare and Care of Owned and Stray Companion Animals of the Municipality of Nikaia - Ag. I. Rentis, Panagiotis Baxevanakis.
The University courtyard hosted puppies for adoption and a collection rally for animal food and care related items, which were then donated to shelters in the area.
