The awarding ceremony ended with the honoree’s speech, “California and the Hellenic Republic: Ties to the Past and a Shared Vision for the Future”. After warmly thanking the University and the Department for the honor bestowed upon her, she referred to her visits to Greece as a child and the people who taught her what it means to be Greek and what values and history this heavy ancestry carries. A European country and an American state, with more than three times the population, at first glance do not seem to have much in common; however, both Greece and California struggle with identical issues. Migration and environmental protection are prominent and pressing concerns and require innovative thinking, research and joint practices in order to be solved.
