During our participation in the 88th TIF, at the Akademia Presentation Space, the Communication Manager of the University of Piraeus, Eleni Stathatou presented the actions and applications the University of Piraeus has implemented and continues to implement, on the subject of Accessibility and inclusion, focusing on three pillars.
UniPi has worked on adaptations to the natural environment (e.g. accessible library, special parking spaces for disabled people).
It supports IT technologies (accessible workstations in the library, digitization of books in appropriate formats, accessible website (https://accessibility.unipi.gr) in Greek and English, educational material in various accessible digital formats, supporting course material in all University departments and guidelines for producing accessible documents and presentations).
And access actions (remedial teaching courses, support for alternative student examination methods, psycho-emotional support in collaboration with the University's Counseling Center, career counseling, organization of seminars-workshops for making career decisions, creating a CV, etc.).
In addition, Eleni Stathatou referenced the Manto, Healthsign and UNIPI AR Experience Application Suite Research Projects. Manto of the research group of Professor Apostolos Milionis created applications in the context of smart cities and smart tourism, external and internal navigation for people with visual impairments BlindMuseumTourer and BlindRouteVision
Healthsign of the research group of Professor Ilias Maglogiannis at the Laboratory of Computational Biomedicine is a tool for automatically converting sign symbols into sound, so that people without knowledge of sign language can communicate with the deaf.
UNIPI AR Experience of the research group of Professor Ilias Maglogiannis at the Laboratory of Computational Biomedicine is an augmented reality (AR) navigation application using AR Anchor "checkpoint" reference points.
In the end, she presented actions that contribute educationally, research and consultatively to the integration and accessibility of technology in the urban environment and are implemented by the UNESCO University Chair under the title "Creative Cities in Motion". Urban Sustainable Mobility and Utilization of Cultural Resources”, in the "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, Internet of Things (IoT) and Advanced Digital Technologies and Services" Laboratory, with Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados, Director of the Laboratory, and Chair Holder.
The University of Piraeus will not stop its efforts with the aforementioned, as projects and future actions are constantly being launched to make it a fully accessible and friendly university so it will fulfil its purpose in ensuring education for all.
