The past, present and—above all—the future of the University of Piraeus came together during an anniversary evening filled with symbolism and deep emotion, as the University celebrated 88 years since its founding.
Before a capacity audience at the Themistoclean Complex in Nikaia, the University honoured its historic journey, presented its strategy for the new era, launched its first Alumni Conference and awarded its Gold Medal to George Dalaras in recognition of his enduring contribution to Greek culture.
Distinguished journalist Niki Lymperaki hosted the anniversary event and guided the audience through the different parts of the evening.
In his opening address, Professor Michail E. Sfakianakis, Rector of the University of Piraeus, placed particular emphasis on the University’s new path of growth, with internationalisation, innovation and broader access to high-quality education at its core. Among the major initiatives he highlighted was the launch of Global Applied AI, an international joint Master’s programme developed in partnership with Purdue University in Indianapolis. He also referred to two European Master’s programmes in Advanced Cybersecurity Technologies and Governance, which offer 600 fully funded scholarships to citizens of the European Union, as well as the tuition-free MBA in Sustainability.
The Rector also highlighted the role of the Bloomberg Lab, the only facility of its kind in Greek higher education, and the University’s strategic international partnerships, which continue to strengthen its global reach and international profile.
As he stressed:
“The University’s mission goes beyond producing scientific knowledge and supporting professional advancement. It also lies in shaping people who possess values, social awareness and democratic consciousness.”
The screening of the anniversary video marking the University’s 88-year journey created one of the evening’s most emotional moments. Drawing on authentic archival footage from the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, ERT, and adopting the distinctive style of historic newsreels, the video took the audience on a nostalgic journey through different periods of the University’s history. The images revived memories and stirred strong emotions, while connecting the University’s story with the collective memory of Greek society. The audience responded with warm applause.
The first University of Piraeus Alumni Conference held a prominent place in the programme. Distinguished alumni—Theodoros Pantalakis, Member of the University Council; Kyriaki Pitti, Inspector at the National Transparency Authority; and Danae Bezantakou, CEO of Navigator Shipping Consultants and President of the International Propeller Club—shared personal experiences and reflected on the lasting impact of their years at the University. They emphasised that their education at the University of Piraeus shaped not only their professional careers but also their understanding of leadership, responsibility and service. Their contributions highlighted the enduring value of the University's education and reaffirmed the strong bond that continues to unite its graduates with their alma mater. Journalist and University of Piraeus alumnus Aris Ravanos moderated the panel discussion.
The ceremony honouring George Dalaras became the emotional highlight of the evening. By presenting him with its Gold Medal, the University of Piraeus recognised his lifelong contribution to Greek culture, the arts and society. In his tribute, Rector Professor Michail E. Sfakianakis drew attention to the values that George Dalaras and the University share: an outward-looking perspective, an unwavering commitment to excellence, support for younger generations and, above all, a profound sense of social responsibility. As the Rector noted, George Dalaras' life and work demonstrate that true success acquires its deepest meaning when it serves society.
Setting aside all formality, George Dalaras spoke from the heart about the neighbourhood where he was born and raised, only a few streets away from the Themistoclean Complex. He recalled the hardships of growing up in a poor family and reflected on his lifelong dream of attending university—a dream he never had the opportunity to fulfil. With characteristic humility, he asked:
"Why do you honour me in this way? I simply did my job."
His heartfelt words captured the humility and integrity that have defined his remarkable career and deeply moved the audience.
The anniversary celebration concluded with an outstanding performance by the University of Piraeus Music Ensemble, under the artistic direction of Andreas Katsigiannis. One of the evening's most memorable moments came when George Dalaras joined the Ensemble on stage, creating a moving musical finale that earned prolonged applause from the audience. Their performance reflected the close relationship between the University and culture, demonstrating that higher education extends beyond academic achievement to embrace artistic expression and social engagement.
An impressive drone show concluded the evening with a breath-taking display that celebrated the University's past and reflected its aspirations for the future.
As it enters its ninth decade, the University of Piraeus continues to strengthen its international partnerships, expand educational opportunities and prepare the next generation of leaders to address the challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.
