In an evening marked by emotion and strong symbolism, the Department of Tourism Studies of the University of Piraeus awarded an Honorary Doctorate to ĒNSOFI Chairman Achilleas V. Constantakopoulos, recognizing his overall contribution to Greek tourism, sustainable development, and social impact.

The ceremony took place on May 11, 2026, at the packed Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, in the presence of leading representatives from Greece’s political, academic, and business communities.
The distinction marked an important moment for the University of Piraeus while also celebrating the remarkable career of Achilleas Constantakopoulos, who successfully combined entrepreneurial excellence with a vision for high-quality tourism rooted in respect for the environment, culture, and local communities. Through his work — and especially through Costa Navarino — he played a defining role in positioning Greece as an international benchmark for sustainable tourism development.
In his opening address, the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Michail E. Sfakianakis, spoke warmly about the honoree, describing him as a leader with “global vision, a strong moral compass, and deep social awareness.” He emphasized that Achilleas Constantakopoulos represents a model of entrepreneurship that proves development can move forward alongside sustainability, innovation, and regional growth, helping shape a new vision for tourism in Greece.

He highlighted the transformation of Messinia into a global point of reference for high-quality tourism, as well as Achilleas Constantakopoulos’ long-standing contribution to education, society, and culture. He also underscored a development philosophy that connects entrepreneurship with environmental protection and support for local communities.
Achilleas Constantakopoulos delivered a particularly moving speech, thanking the University of Piraeus for the distinction and sharing reflections from his long professional journey. Referring to the challenges of a new era, he stressed that even amid the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, authentic hospitality, human connection, and empathy remain the defining strengths of Greek tourism. He also delivered an inspiring message to younger generations, encouraging them to take risks, explore the world, work hard, and embrace failure as an essential part of growth and progress.
The evening concluded in an emotional atmosphere, as the audience offered Achilleas Constantakopoulos a standing ovation in recognition of his contribution and legacy. The honorary distinction highlighted not only his international impact on Greek tourism, but also the power of a modern entrepreneurial model that links growth with sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility.
