The University of Piraeus has once again brought international recognition to the Greek academic community by securing an outstanding achievement at the global Project Management Championship (PMC). The University had the honour of hosting the Championship Finals on 12–13 June, welcoming top student teams from four continents, who competed both in person and remotely.
Representing Greece, the team from the MSc in Project Management of the University of Piraeus—Vasileios Routos, Charalampos Sofianopoulos, Georgia Tsapali, and Stavros Chiotakakos—earned second place worldwide, finishing just behind the team from Spain.
The competition was organised by the Young Crew of the International Project Management Association (IPMA), one of the world's leading organisations in the field of Project Management. Participants were challenged to manage a complex business project simulation under intense time pressure, demonstrating:
• effective project and risk management,
• leadership and rapid decision-making,
• outstanding teamwork in demanding conditions.
The Greek team impressed the scientific committee with its strategic approach and data-driven decision-making, achieving the highest score in the business simulation.
"The chemistry and mutual trust among the team members were exceptional," said Professor Dimitris Emiris, Academic Director of the MSc in Project Management. "They demonstrated the qualities of outstanding Project Managers, successfully capitalised on their knowledge and skills, and applied international best practices in Project Management. That was the key to their success."
This year's distinction follows the University's first-place victory in the 2025 Championship, making the University of Piraeus the only Greek university to remain consistently among the world's top-performing teams in Project Management for two consecutive years.
Offered by the Department of Industrial Management and Technology, the MSc in Project Management (project.tex.unipi.gr) is the only postgraduate programme in Greece dedicated exclusively to Project Management, awarding an MSc in the discipline. The programme is fully accredited by the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE) and fully aligned with international academic standards.
"Through a modern and comprehensive curriculum, we consistently contribute to the advancement of Project Management in Greece while educating the next generation of leaders in the field," Professor Emiris added.
Project Management has become a strategic capability for organisations across sectors including technology, shipping, energy, and finance. At the University of Piraeus, students do more than study Project Management—they experience it, apply it in practice, and achieve recognition on the global stage.
