The University of Piraeus hosted the open road safety event “In Motion for Safety”, organised in collaboration with the Saracakis Group of Companies, attracting a particularly strong turnout of students and members of the university community. .

The event focused on preventing road accidents, promoting responsible behaviour on the road and, above all, highlighting the role that awareness and education among young people can play in protecting human life.
At the University’s Conference Auditorium, representatives of the Attica Traffic Police, road safety experts and executives from the Saracakis Group shared data, real-life cases and practical insights, while the audience’s active participation turned the event into an open and engaging discussion.
In his opening remarks, Professor Michail Sfakianakis, Rector of the University of Piraeus, stressed the importance of personal responsibility and responsible driving behaviour in reducing road accidents. He also highlighted the value of initiatives that bring knowledge and social awareness closer to young people.

Brigadier General Sotiris Kaltabanis and Police Lieutenant Colonel Kostas Petropoulos, representing the Attica Traffic Police Directorate, presented the results of recent enforcement and prevention initiatives. They discussed intensified checks on mandatory helmet use and driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as the significant decline in fatal road accidents recorded in Attica during the first five months of 2026.
Alexandros Saracakis, CEO of the Saracakis Group of Companies, outlined the philosophy behind “In Motion for Safety”, stressing that informing and educating young people are essential tools for saving lives and building a safer road culture.

Maria Xytaki, Group Corporate Affairs, Communications and ESG Senior Manager, presented data on road safety in Greece. She noted that despite the progress made in recent years, Greece continues to record a road fatality rate above the European average.
Konstantinos Markouizos (Iaveris), founding member of the “Iaveris” Road Behaviour School and Deputy Regional Governor of Attica responsible for road safety, and Spyros Koutras, motorcycle safety instructor and founder of the City Art motorcycle training school, led the educational part of the event. Through practical examples and real-life incidents, they highlighted critical aspects of safe road behaviour for both motorists and motorcycle riders. Particularly powerful were videos captured by cameras at the very moment road accidents occurred, confronting the audience with the immediate and real consequences that can follow a wrong decision or a momentary lapse of attention on the road.

Journalist and Formula 1 correspondent Takis Pournarakis moderated the event, encouraging a lively exchange with the audience and giving participants the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with the speakers.
The strong turnout reflected the university community’s keen interest in an issue that directly affects everyday life, particularly among younger people. “In Motion for Safety” also highlighted the importance of collaboration between universities, public authorities and the business community in fostering a new road culture—one in which safety is a conscious choice and personal responsibility.
