In a ceremony highlighting institutional continuity while marking the beginning of a new chapter for the University, Professor Demosthenes Kyriazis assumed office as Rector of the University of Piraeus, succeeding Professor Michail Sfakianakis, on Tuesday, September the 1st, 2026.
The Rectoral Leadership Handover Ceremony took place in an atmosphere of emotion and reflection. The new Rectoral Authority takes forward the work and strong foundations established in recent years, with the aim of advancing the University’s development and strengthening its international presence.
Outgoing Rector Professor Michail Sfakianakis briefly reflected on his term in office, describing it as the completion of an important chapter both for the University and for his thirty-year academic career in three different institutions. He thanked the university community for its contribution to achieving the goals set during his tenure and placed particular emphasis on the people-centred approach that shaped his work, the importance of dialogue and mutual respect, and the relationship of trust built with students. As he noted, students came to regard the University as “their second home.” In closing, he expressed his confidence that the entire university community will support the new Rector, united by the shared goal “to take the University even higher.”
Upon assuming his duties, Rector of the University of Piraeus Professor Demosthenes Kyriazis spoke of the “heavy legacy” he inherits and paid warm tribute to his predecessor, highlighting both his academic and administrative contribution and his personal presence within the university community. Referring to Michail Sfakianakis’ unwavering willingness to stand by members of the University and offer his support whenever needed, he remarked: “We were fortunate to experience it.” Professor Kyriazis also outlined the direction for the next chapter, stressing that this new period involves the entire university community and that the University’s continued development depends on a collective effort. The focus now lies on building on what has already been achieved and creating the conditions for the University’s next steps in education, research and international engagement, while further strengthening its links with society and the economy.
During the ceremony, the new Rector presented Professor Michail Sfakianakis with an honorary plaque in recognition of his contribution to the University of Piraeus and his service as Rector.
The handover of the Rectoral Authority marks not only the beginning of a new administrative period but also the continuation of a shared path towards an even stronger, more outward-looking and internationally recognised University of Piraeus.
