The relationship between academic knowledge and the real economy, the evolving demands of leadership, and the changes Artificial Intelligence is bringing to the world of work and the younger generation took centre stage as the University of Piraeus awarded an Honorary Doctorate to Apostolos S. Tamvakakis, Founder and Managing Partner of EOS Capital Partners.
The ceremony took place on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, bringing together representatives of the state, the business and banking communities, academia, and numerous guests.
In his address, Professor Michail Sfakianakis, Rector of the University of Piraeus, placed the distinction within the context of the University's longstanding commitment to bringing academic knowledge closer to the needs of society and the real economy. He highlighted the University's international outlook, innovation initiatives and partnerships, with particular reference to the international joint Master's programme Global Applied AI with Purdue University Indianapolis and the University's international initiatives in Artificial Intelligence.
Professor Sfakianakis also stressed that an Honorary Doctorate represents the University's highest academic distinction and honours individuals who turn knowledge into creation, success into social responsibility, and leadership into an enduring contribution to society. In Apostolos Tamvakakis, he noted, the University honours a leader who has combined academic expertise with integrity, foresight and a strong sense of responsibility.
Professor Panagiotis Artikis, Deputy Chair of the Department of Business Administration, delivered the Laudatio, presenting the career and achievements of the honouree. He traced Apostolos Tamvakakis' longstanding involvement in banking, investment and entrepreneurship, his contribution to the modernisation of the Greek banking system, and his social and philanthropic work. He also highlighted the entrepreneurial activity of EOS Capital Partners and the creation of thousands of jobs through investments with a strong economic and social impact, as well as Tamvakakis' commitment to diversity and the balanced representation of women and men in senior leadership positions.
In his address entitled “Artificial Intelligence, Work and the Future of the Younger Generation,” Apostolos Tamvakakis focused on the changes that Artificial Intelligence is already bringing to the economy, the labour market and everyday life. He argued that the greatest challenge of this new era lies not in the technology itself, but in people's ability to adapt, continue learning and make creative use of new opportunities.
Artificial Intelligence, he stressed, is transforming professions while making distinctly human capabilities even more valuable: critical thinking, creativity, leadership and human judgement. He encouraged younger generations to approach change with optimism, courage and a commitment to continuous development, while also pointing to the significant opportunities emerging for entrepreneurship and innovation.
At the same time, he addressed the responsibilities that accompany this new technological era, emphasising the importance of using Artificial Intelligence responsibly and strengthening critical thinking.
The honoree concluded his address by thanking the University of Piraeus for the honour of awarding him an Honorary Doctorate and returned to the importance of closer ties between universities and businesses. Stronger cooperation between the two, he noted, is essential if knowledge is to translate into innovation, investment and high-quality jobs. He also expressed his commitment to supporting initiatives that bring academia and the real economy closer together.
The honorary doctorate thus highlighted a broader dimension of the University's relationship with the economy and society: its commitment to building bridges between academic knowledge, entrepreneurship and the experience of individuals who have played an active role in shaping Greece's contemporary economic landscape, while offering younger generations examples of leadership, responsibility and continuous adaptation in a changing world.
