On Friday, October 16, 2026, the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor Kyriazis Dimosthenis, and the President of the University of Sfax in Tunisia, Professor Ahmed Hadj Kacem, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening academic and research cooperation between the two institutions.
Founded in 1986, the University of Sfax is a major public higher education institution in North Africa, with more than 34,000 students and a broad range of academic disciplines. The University places particular emphasis on research, innovation, and connecting academic knowledge with industry and society, while actively pursuing international academic partnerships and scientific exchange initiatives.
The agreement builds on the existing cooperation established through the Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility programme and opens up new opportunities for joint educational and research initiatives. At the University of Piraeus, the Department of Informatics has taken the initiative to develop and support this cooperation.
The Memorandum covers a wide range of academic disciplines, with particular emphasis on Informatics, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Information Systems and Services, as well as Tourism, Maritime Studies, and Business Administration.
The main areas of cooperation include the exchange of scientific knowledge and expertise, the organisation of joint conferences, seminars, and workshops, and collaboration among teaching and research staff. In addition, the two universities will explore opportunities for student and academic staff mobility, the development of joint educational programmes, and the implementation of collaborative research projects.
The new agreement expands the University of Piraeus’ opportunities for international cooperation, strengthens its ties with the academic community in North Africa, and creates new prospects for joint initiatives in education and research.
