The University of Piraeus and STRONG ME Civil Non-Profit Organization (STRONG ME A.M.K.E.) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), launching a joint initiative with significant social and academic impact. The signing ceremony took place in Piraeus on 17 July 2026.
Professor Michail Sfakianakis, Rector of the University of Piraeus, and Aspasia Theofilou, Legal Representative of STRONG ME, signed the Memorandum on behalf of their respective organizations.
Through this partnership, the University and STRONG ME aim to strengthen the connection between academia and society. Under a three-year cooperation framework, they will join forces to:
• conduct research and produce scientific evidence on critical issues related to domestic and gender-based violence, equality, and non-discrimination;
• organize educational and training activities, including seminars, conferences, and workshops, to raise awareness within both the University community and society at large;
• exchange expertise by combining the University's scientific and methodological excellence with STRONG ME's field experience, lived knowledge, and extensive network;
• foster an inclusive culture based on respect and the prevention of all forms of violence and harassment.
The Committee for Equality and the Elimination of Discrimination of the University of Piraeus will coordinate the initiative on behalf of the University, reinforcing its institutional commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive academic environment.
Professor Michail Sfakianakis, Rector of the University of Piraeus, stated:
"The University of Piraeus remains committed to its mission of social contribution and outward engagement. By joining forces with STRONG ME, we reaffirm our belief that scientific knowledge must provide the foundation for addressing deeply rooted social challenges. Through this partnership, and with the active contribution of our University's Committee for Equality and the Elimination of Discrimination, we aim not only to produce high-quality research but also to cultivate citizens who embrace empathy, respect, and zero tolerance for violence."
Aspasia Theofilou, Legal Representative of STRONG ME, commented:
"Today marks an important milestone for STRONG ME. Collaborating with a leading higher education institution such as the University of Piraeus provides us with the scientific tools and methodological support needed to enhance the measurable and lasting social impact of our initiatives against gender-based violence. Together, academia and civil society are building a fairer and safer future."
