The University of Piraeus and Panathēnea announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on August 31, 2026, establishing a long-term framework for cooperation focused on supporting entrepreneurship and innovation and strengthening links between the academic community and the startup ecosystem.
Professor Michail Sfakianakis, Rector of the University of Piraeus, and Lars Rasmussen, legal representative of Panathēnea, signed the Memorandum on behalf of the two organizations.
The partnership aims to systematically identify market needs and connect them with the University’s laboratories, research centers and academic expertise, promoting applied research and knowledge transfer.
Key Areas of Cooperation
Connecting Market Needs with Research: The partnership will connect real-world market challenges with the University of Piraeus laboratories, faculty members, research teams and university spin-offs.
Investment and Entrepreneurship Event – November 2026: The two organizations will plan and co-host an event at the University of Piraeus, bringing together investors, startup founders, spin-off representatives and students. The event will provide opportunities for the academic community to engage directly with the innovation ecosystem.
Innovative Ideas Competition: The partnership will prepare the ground for a future innovation and startup competition designed to showcase and reward new entrepreneurial ideas.
Student Initiatives and Career Office Cooperation: Executives and investors will deliver workshops, lectures and presentations for undergraduate students, while close cooperation with the University’s Career Office will create opportunities for employment, internships and mentoring.
This initiative reflects the commitment of both organizations to academic excellence, reciprocity and meaningful support for a new generation of scientists and entrepreneurs.
Panathēnea is a non-profit initiative that organizes the Panathēnea Festival, an annual international festival of technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and art held in Athens. Inspired by the structure and spirit of the ancient Panathenaic festival, it offers a contemporary reinterpretation designed to showcase ideas and foster connections across the global innovation ecosystem. Notably, students and recent graduates run the entire event, supported by an advisory board of international investors and entrepreneurs. The festival serves as a multidimensional platform connecting startups, investors, business leaders, policymakers and artists.
