The Computational Biomedicine Laboratory (CBML) of the Department of Digital Systems at the University of Piraeus has earned third place in the IFMBE Scientific Challenge Competition 2025, an international contest hosted within the framework of the globally significant NBC 2025 & PCBBE 2025 Conference. This remarkable achievement places the University of Piraeus among the world’s leading institutions in Biomedical Engineering innovation.

The 2025 competition, organized by the Nalecz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering of the Polish Academy of Sciences, focused on the theme: “Automated Wound Segmentation in Digital Medical Images”—a critical area for enhancing diagnostic accuracy and monitoring treatment outcomes. Competing against teams from top-tier universities worldwide, the University of Piraeus’ research team developed a cutting-edge solution that achieved an impressive Combined F1 Score of 0.8854.

Led by Professor Dr. Ilias Maglogiannis (Director of the Computational Biomedicine Laboratory in the Dept of Digital Systems in the University of Piraeus), the team also included Dr. Athanasios Kallipolitis, PhD candidate Melina Tziomaka, and PhD candidate Argyrios Zafeiriou. Their innovative system enables automated wound measurement and healing monitoring, offering direct clinical applicability that enhances patient care and supports more efficient workflows for healthcare professionals.
This distinction, awarded during one of the most prominent biomedical engineering events co-sponsored by the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), reflects the University of Piraeus’ ongoing commitment to research excellence, interdisciplinary innovation, and impactful healthcare solutions. The joint NBC 2025 & PCBBE 2025 conference draws a truly global audience, encouraging dialogue between academia, industry, and clinical practice—making this recognition even more meaningful on the international stage.
