“Knowledge awakens the human spirit” — A message of prevention and awareness
Marking the month of October, which is dedicated to breast cancer awareness and prevention, the University of Piraeus, in collaboration with the Volunteer Group Against Cancer “AgaliaZO”, organized an important awareness event titled “Get Informed about HPV and Breast Cancer”.
The event aimed to highlight the importance of prevention and early diagnosis through informative presentations and interactive discussions covering topics such as proper nutrition, exercise, psychological support for families, and effective communication on health-related issues.
The event was opened by the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor Michail Sfakianakis, who welcomed the participants with Hippocrates’ timeless phrase: “Prevention is better than cure.” As he noted, prevention is founded on knowledge — a principle that lies at the heart not only of this event but also of many other university initiatives related to health and social engagement.
“Knowledge awakens the human spirit and is essential both for the individual and for those around them,” he emphasized.
Greetings were also delivered by Iosif Vourakis, President of the Board of Directors of the Municipal Radio of Piraeus, and Anastasia Pasakopoulou, President of the Volunteer Group Against Cancer “AgaliaZO”. Both speakers underlined the power of information and collective effort in promoting public health.
Throughout the event, attendees had the opportunity to attend a series of engaging presentations. The speakers — Pantelis Messaropoulos, Elena Kouvdou, Ioannis Boutas, Maria Myriokefalytaki, Konstantinos Kokkolis, and Olga Liontopoulou — approached the topic of breast cancer and HPV from different perspectives, combining scientific insights with practical advice on prevention and overall well-being..
The discussion was moderated by journalist Katia Antoniadi, who facilitated a constructive dialogue between experts and participants. Students in particular took an active part, asking questions and sharing reflections that enriched the exchange of ideas.
The event concluded with the powerful message that prevention is not merely a medical procedure but a way of life. Information, knowledge, and timely action can save lives — and the University of Piraeus continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote health and social awareness.
