For the Christmas holidays, the University of Piraeus, in cooperation with its volunteer group “Kerykes,” implemented a comprehensive social solidarity initiative, reaffirming in practice its strong sense of social responsibility and its enduring connection with the local and wider community.
This threefold initiative focused on supporting children hosted in three emblematic Child Protection Institutions in Attica and Piraeus, offering tangible assistance along with messages of care, empathy, and solidarity.
As part of the initiative, the University of Piraeus supported the historic Zanneio Child Care Institution and Education by offering twenty-five thirty euro vouchers, for essential needs of the children residing at the institution. In addition, a visit was carried out to the Attica Centre for Child Protection "Mitera", during which essential goods and gifts were donated, supporting the Center’s long-standing and highly significant mission. For 75 years, the Center has been providing care and protection to children who lack a safe family environment.. The third action was at the Female Shelter Agios Alexandros' of Paleo Faliro, where gifts and necessities were delivered to the girls hosted at the facility, strengthening its work in social support and rehabilitation.
In his statement, the Rector of the University of Piraeus, Professor Michail Sfakianakis, emphasized that social contribution constitutes a timeless and integral part of the University’s identity. He noted that through these targeted volunteer actions, the University seeks to provide meaningful support to vulnerable social groups, while at the same time cultivating among its students the values of respect, empathy, and solidarity.
The active participation of students and members of the academic and administrative staff in these initiatives highlighted the University of Piraeus as a vibrant hub of volunteerism and social responsibility, demonstrating that the academic community can and should contribute substantially to society, particularly during periods of increased social needs and sensitivity.
